Godawari Power & Ispat Ltd. was incorporated as Ispat Godawari Ltd. in 1999. The commercial operations began in 2001 by commissioning the first Sponge Iron plant .GPIL undertook the first phase of its expansion plan in 2004 for sponge iron (1,30,000 tonnes), steel billets (1,00,000 tonnes) and captive power generation (10 MW).

This included setting up new facilities to manufacture ferro alloys (16,500 tonnes) and HB wire (60,000 tonnes), the first big step towards moving up the value chain.

This phase entails expansion of sponge iron capacity (by 2,60,000 tonnes), steel billets (2,00,000 tonnes) and captive power generating capacity (by 25 MW).

Over the last few years, the company has scaled up its capacity five fold and is today the third largest producer of coal based sponge iron in India.

GPIL’s first WRBH captive power plant (7 MW) also became the first one in the world to be registered with CDM Executive Board for entitlement of carbon credits under the Kyoto Protocol. GPIL is the licensed power trader by CEPL and is a member of INDIAN ENERGY EXCHANGE (IEX).

GPIL has achieved about 75% recovery of waste heat from flue gas of sponge iron kiln and utilization of same heat to produce steam. The steam is further utilized to generate power.
